Square Enix Working on Final Fantasy 7 NFTs

Square Enix has announced it will release NFTs based on its mass-favorite game Final Fantasy 7 to mark the 25th anniversary of the game. The company will launch physical trading cards and the Cloud Strife action figure alongside the digital versions on November 2023.

There has been substantial opposition from the gamer community at large and reports of serious downfalls in the NFT market. Square Enix has, however, decided to go ahead with its plans by partnering up with the NFT platform Enjin.

“This partnership marks a coming-of-age phase for digital assets and entertainment; Square Enix, an esteemed developer with iconic intellectual property, is paving the way for the industry,” said Enjin exec Witek Radomski in a press release. 

Enjin has addressed concerns about the environmental impact as blockchain technology requires colossal amounts of electricity. It has adopted a ‘plan to enable carbon-neutral NFTs by 2030’,  

The digital collection of the collectible cards and the action figure will feature on the blockchain network Efinity, based on Polkadot. This has been reported to be more environment-friendly than Bitcoin or Ethereum. The company describes itself as an ideal match for eco-conscious blockchain users. 

Final Fantasy 7 to get trading cards

The normal figurine costs $129.99, while the Digital Plus edition will cost $159.99. The Final Fantasy 7-inspired trading card packs will get six cards for $4, with an option to redeem an NFT version of a card included in each pack.

The Digital Plus edition is described as “a set product of physical action figure with one each of exchange tickets to redeem a digital certificate of authenticity and digital version of the figure. Both digital certificates of authenticity and digital version of the figure are managed by the blockchain technology known as NFTs.” 

However, potential buyers are cautioned that “In case the Enjin services become unavailable in the future, you may lose access to the NFT digital certificate of authenticity and digital version of the figure.”

The action figure is available for pre-order now on the official Square Enix website. Pre-orders for the physical cards are slated to go live later this year.
