Fortnite, the popular online game, is joining Olympic eSports, but in a slightly different way. Instead of being played as a battle royale, Fortnite has designed a custom map with shooting targets to reflect the sport's shooting competition.

Fortnite will be one of the games that will feature at the inaugural Olympic Esports Week. The event, organized by the International Olympic Committee, will take place in Singapore. The Fortnite Champion Series will send 12 players to Singapore to test their accuracy and compete for the gold medal on June 24th. The Fortnite tournament will require players to navigate the in-game environment as they compete, but it is unclear what this will look like in practice.

The Fortnite team has developed an Island called Creative Island. The developers specifically designed the island to reflect “sport shooting competition” for the Olympic Esports.  The island is specifically for the purpose of shooting targets, indicating that it is not a traditional battle royale game where the objective is to eliminate all other players. In this game, success is determined more by one's ability to accurately hit the targets than by being the only surviving player. Therefore, the ultimate winner is the person who can demonstrate the best aiming skills.

Other games included in the event are WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros for baseball, Chess.com for chess, Zwift for cycling, Just Dance for dancing, Gran Turismo 7 for motorsport, Virtual Regatta for sailing, Virtual Taekwondo for taekwondo, and Tennis Clash for tennis. The games will be held in Singapore's Suntec Centre but will be streamed globally on the official Olympics website and social channels.

Olympic Esports Games Dates

The Olympic Esports Games will take place in Singapore's Suntec Centre on June 24. However, the event will be streamed globally on the official Olympics website and social channels. Tickets for the event cost $7.50 per day or $20 for a three-day pass.

What’s your take? What do you think about Fortnite's appearance at the Olympic Esports event in Singapore? Let us know on our socials here or in the comments below.

Battle royale games are so popular right now, ever since PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) made its debut in 2017, and Fortnite stole the show a mere few months later. Thanks to the rampant success of these two pioneer games, the battle royale impact on the gaming industry grew so strong. So much, so that new battle royales continue to release almost every other week while, all along, the staples continue to thrive.

As much as Fortnite and PUBG are hands down the best battle royale games you can play, you’re completely welcome to want to dip your toes in fresh waters. Especially now that battle royales don’t necessarily stick to the ever-shrinking map and shooter recipe. If you’re curious to know which upcoming battle royale games have caught the most attention, we’ve compiled the five most anticipated battle royale games coming out in 2023 that you wouldn’t want to miss.

5. Hit and Boom

YouTube Video

You may already know the Hit and Boom 3v3 brawler robot fight game. However, there’s an upcoming Hit and Boom battle royale with an expected Q3 2023 release date. The new game is free to play with blockchain integration, allowing play-to-earn mechanics. Gameplay-wise, it’s a top-down, skill-shot-based game where animalistic robots called Boombots fight off against one another until the last robot standing wins.

Although there isn’t much, we know about the gameplay specifics so far, integrating the game with blockchain technology seems to suggest ownership of in-game assets, a minting theme for NFTs, and an online marketplace for trading. There are also leagues and tournaments set up where the winners will possibly earn token rewards.

Some of the robots you’ll play as include fun animals like pandas and turtles. Each character has unique cosmetics that can be bought as NFTs. The website also suggests the ownership of NFT pets. It’s all so exciting. Since there seems to be a closed beta already underway, perhaps we’ll have more specific information. However, you could wait for the open beta, which is currently set to launch in Q3 2023.

4. Rainy Neon: Baku

YouTube Video

Alternatively, you could take your chances in 2121 Baku, where a grim, dark cyberpunk future has become the new norm. At first glance, Rainy Neon: Baku looks absolutely gorgeous, possibly giving Fortnite a run for its money. It also plays in pretty similar ways, like choosing your character at the start and having access to a wide array of special abilities.

As you move about the city, either on foot or by driving a fast car, you’ll need to track down deadly cyborgs representing corrupt capitalist corporations and take them down. When you successfully win the battles, you’ll earn profits and have saved the people of Baku from harm. Of course, it’s not just cyborgs that pose a threat. You’ll also need to fight against human players made up of up to 32 fighters and up to two cyborgs.

The “Rainy Neon” tag name also holds significance to the game’s mechanics. Besides the overall neon-lit cities and gloomy weather, it turns out that getting your cyborg suit wet has dire consequences. So, ideally, you’ll need to throw on a shield to stay dry. While you can expect the game in Q4 2023, feel free to check out the trailer here in the meantime.

3. My Hero Academia: Ultra Rumble

YouTube Video

So far, most battle royales apply a relatively similar gameplay pattern, whether it’s the setting, gameplay, or overall look and feel. However, if you’d like a complete, drastic change of scene, you can always try out the upcoming My Hero Academia: Ultra Rumble battle royale game. It’s the first-ever battle royale to adapt the hit My Hero Academia anime/manga series.

Players can choose to play as the hero or villain against other players. Depending on the class you choose, you can have access to an array of special abilities, like zero gravity, to create floating hazards or cause unexpected chaos on the battlefield. You can also team up with two other players and fight off up to seven opposing teams.

Because you’ll be playing in teams, wandering off by yourself may not always work in your favor. So, cooperating with one another and devising a plan that maximizes your skills and environment could be the way to be the last one standing. At the moment, a closed beta is underway, and an official release date is unclear. Hopefully, the game will release sometime in 2023. Let’s wait and see.

2. Shattle

YouTube Video

Set in Cold War Sweden, Shattle takes you back to 1970, where up to 25 players get trapped in a warzone. The only way out? To fight to the death until the last-man-standing wins. It gets more complicated when, besides needing to survive against 24 other players, you risk getting obliterated by random air strikes or buildings crashing down on you.

Fortunately, Shattle is a survival game that offers the tools you need to stay alive. Through shooting, looting, and crafting all sorts of weapons, the deadlier, the better, you can protect yourself against any looming threat that comes at you, all while staying clear of the bombs falling from the sky.

Unlike other large-scale maps like PUBG or Fortnite, Shattle puts players within close-quarters maps. So, really, there isn’t someplace safe to hide, at least not for too long before someone sniffs you out. Such compact spaces make Shattle that much more exciting. You’ll essentially have to fight to the death throughout the game if you’re to have any luck at being the last man standing.

Although there isn’t much we know about Shattle’s release date, platforms, and other gameplay information; Steam seems to suggest the game will be “coming soon,” hopefully sometime in 2023. In the meantime, feel free to check out the official trailer here.

1. Off the Grid

YouTube Video

Back to the cyberpunk lifestyle. Off the Grid looks enticing with its dystopian, covert corporate war cyberpunk future. It’s also quite unique for wanting to focus on narration. Through both PvP battles and PvE storyline missions, players can fight in real-time across a map that other online players can access.

While exact details remain unclear, it seems developer Gunzilla Games plans to throw the ball out of the park on this one. Their intent is to design a map larger than any we’ve seen before. Plus, they plan to host up to 150 players. With the full story campaign, 3D scanned skins, loadout customization options, and more ambitious moves to come, all running at full speed, I certainly can’t help but wonder if Off the Grid will pioneer the next stride in battle royale.

So, what’s your take? Will you be picking up any of the five most anticipated battle royale games coming out in 2023? Are there more games we should know about? Let us know down in the comments or over on our socials here.

It’s hardly a debate whether Fortnite is worthwhile. Praise for the Epic Games title has been sung far and wide. From its vibrant, colorful open-world to its free-form building mechanics that set it apart from the crowd. In retrospect, there were other battle royale games before Fortnite. However, Fortnite tossed aside the lacklustre premise to be “the last man standing.” Instead, they introduced powerful innovations that went on to define the battle royale genre we know today.

There’s truly no superior reason to choose other battle royale games besides Fortnite. Well, unless you’ve played it long enough to want to try something new. Fortunately, there are some quality games like Fortnite out there. Some are battle royales too, while others offer the co-op gameplay you may be longing for. Still, there are more games today that may be giving Fortnite a run for its crafting and building mechanics. For whatever reason you may have, here are the five best games like Fortnite you won’t want to miss.

5. Minecraft: Hunger Games

YouTube Video

Minecraft, as a franchise, is a no-debate superior crafting and building mechanics game. It’s a game that features fun, blocky characters whose eyes, clothes, and hair are free for you to customize. They often roam around in mobs of many tropes. Since its first public outing in 2009, so many gamers have flocked over to the franchise. It’s just a fun and easy way to pass time with friends and family.

It gets better, though, with the many spin-offs and modes the Minecraft franchise has spun. One of these is the battle royale game Minecraft: Hunger Games, which still has hundreds of online servers available to play. The key for these games is the thousands of crafting and building mechanics the Minecraft franchise has specialized in all these years.

Gather resources, fend for your team, and stay alive for as long as you can. Even though the combat barely compares to that of Fortnite, there’s a reason why Minecraft is such a cultural phenomenon, and that’s because of its adorable blocky open-world sandbox nature welcoming to players of all ages.

4. PUBG: Battlegrounds

YouTube Video

For quite a while, Fortnite has always been held in comparison to PUBG: Battlegrounds. The two have gone head-to-head on the “who did it best” scale, often coming in with a tie or a win by a mere few points. Consequently, both games have had their influence on the battle royale genre we know today.

Like Fortnite, PUBG is also a 99 v 1 game in the fight of who’ll be the last man standing. However, PUBG made its debut way before Fortnite came along, and solidified itself as the most immersive, intense, and realistic battle royale of its time. It’s literally kill or be killed across its five maps as players scavenge for guns, gadgets, vehicles, and other items that can help you survive.

Compared to Fortnite, PUBG is gritty. The game comes off a little more serious. Even the art style differs greatly, with PUBG offering a less vibrant feel to the battlefield. Otherwise, the two have wildly similar gameplay, which makes for a great alternative to switch to without straying too far off the road.

3. Apex Legends

YouTube Video

Apex Legends is another first-person shooter you may want to consider. It has a wild set of more than 20 characters to choose from. Each hero has their own skills and abilities that you can tweak to your gaming style.

Players are dropped onto a giant island. They start to scavenge for resources like weapons, armor, and so on. A character like Pathfinder can point out future safe zones, while others like Gibraltar provide more shield protection in gunning and running scenarios.

However, there are no free-form building mechanics, which some may find to be a little too much going on. Sometimes, straightforwardness takes the crown home, and Apex Legends’ pure focus on 3 v 3 PvP sure does.

2. Among Us

YouTube Video

It’s never a little too not fun to really try something new. So far, we’ve ranked the best games like Fortnite which are also battle royales. But, you may want to skip the battle royale altogether, yet stil maintain the online gaming culture taking root in many hearts today.

Among Us is many things except for a battle royale or free-form building sandbox game. It’s pretty much an online multiplayer social deduction game composed of a team of crewmates running around a ship station, trying to identify the impostor among them.

There are simple tasks to keep the crewmates busy. It helps to complete these because the impostor cannot complete tasks. Rather, they sneak around, sabotaging your every move and killing each of you without getting caught.

Sounds fun? Well, if you like the sound of tracking down suspects, and pleading your innocence while putting the blame on others, Among Us could be your next gem. Who knows? You may even find inspiration to win Fortnite’s Among Us cross-over.

1. Call of Duty: Warzone

YouTube Video

Switching gears to staple first-person shooter games, Call of Duty: Warzone is an alternative 150-player battle royale you could try. Call of Duty: Warzone is fast-paced with pretty intricate customization options. Like Fortnite, many players stay loyal to the franchise.

Its premise is to survive a shrinking battlefield that mimics guns and warfare in the best way possible. It also incorporates a modern twist, so you’ll see skyscrapers, a city in ruin, and a few too many upper-hand spots for sniper lovers out there.

While other Call of Duty installments are addicting contenders too, Warzone offers unmatched content in the battle royale genre. Plus, it’s the first to allow players who die too early to respawn via 1v1 gulag fights. You’ll have just a handgun. However, it presents a second opportunity to ready your three-man squad and loot again.

So, what’s your take? Do you agree with our five best games like Fortnite? Are there other games we should know about? Let us know down in the comments or over on our socials here.

A battle royale is only as good as its roster of weapons. The recent release of Call of Duty: Warzone 2 has thrown fans into a frenzy. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II's sequel is a big step up from what came before. The game now features AI soldiers and new borders to explore. Moreover, you can also battle it out with AI and user-controlled opponents for loot in the extraction game mode.

As with every battle royale game, you will start with a limited inventory and expand as you progress. Activision's latest installment has ten weapon classes, which you can unlock by increasing your military rank or upgrading the weapon's base. However, with a decent set of ammunition to choose from, it's only suitable to equip yourself with the upper crust's best. Here are the five best weapons in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.

5. FSS Hurricane

World of Warcraft: Dragonflight Review

The FSS Hurricane returns to Call of Duty: Warzone 2 after being featured in the game's prequel. The FSS is a submachine gun (SMG) manufactured by Tempus Armament, a weapons manufacturer based in the game. You can quickly tell the weapons they manufacture from their muffed fist logo holding a spiked mace.

The FSS Hurricane's best features are its sharp point accuracy and large magazine size. The low fire rate and kill time can seem like a downer. However, the SMG makes up for it with various attachments. Although season 1 introduces the BAS-P as an SMG, it doesn't come close to the FSS Hurricane.

You can access the weapon during the Ghost Team mission. After taking control of Gaz, you'll be tasked with navigating to hangar 3. Of course, you'll meet resistance, but you can find the weapon inside the trailer a few yards from the soldiers firing at you. Walk into the trailer, and you'll find the weapon lying on the desk, waiting in the wings.

4. Signal 50

The Signal 50 is your best bet for long-range firing. The sniper fires the fastest rounds and has an impressive recoil thanks to the reciprocating barrel. You don't have to worry about losing your target after firing a shot.

On the downside, this rifle has poor handling speeds and low damage. These disappointing features may make you rethink equipping your avatar with the weapon. However, it makes up for it with a high refire rate. You can set up your station miles away and still strike down your enemy while drawing little attention to your base. Compared to rifles that deal more damage, the Signal 50 stands out for its impeccable long-range.

Moreover, the weapon has the best attachments and loadouts. The best part is that you don't have to upgrade many other weapons since most unlocks are unique to the Signal 50. You can only access this sniper by reaching player level 4 and earning enough XP. You can accomplish this by completing all the challenges and modes.

3. Victus XMR

Weapons in Call of Duty Warzone 2

Another sniper for the list, the Victus XMR, is significantly better than the Signal 50 for the impressive damage it deals. You stand a better chance of downing your enemies with the weapon's fascinating 275-damage headshot. One shot can take down even the most heavily armored foe.

What's more, this weapon handles better despite seeming like quite the heavy killing machine. Surprisingly, it handles better than the Signal 50. The weapon is available in the Season 1 Battle Pass and is unlocked after the successful completion of the level.

As expected, the sniper has a downside: a low fire rate. However, the bolt-action sniper makes up for it with its long range and bullet velocity. Once you fire from a distance, you won't have to fire twice. The loadout and attachments can also transform the sniper into a top-tier annihilator.

2. M4

The M4 is a lethal weapon owing to its high damage deals and low recoil. The weapon does an impressive job at both medium and close range. As a starter weapon, it gives newbies the thrill and features they need for a hit. However, you'll find other, more powerful weapons after making progress in the game.

Moreover, the weapon is flexible and can fit into any class option. As part of the weapons, you'll get to unlock first in the game, the M4 draws you closer to gold camo. Also, its versatility allows for a wide range of loadouts and attachments, making it a compelling choice for warfare in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.

Aside from its high fire rate and robust stopping power, the M4 has spot-on accuracy ranking it top among the mean killing machines. You can unlock this assault rifle by progressing to level 4 and accessing the custom loadouts. Level four allows you to access additional attachments and weapons, such as the M16.

1. STB 556

Weapons in Call of Duty Warzone 2

Making it to the top of our list is the STB 556. You can't simply go wrong with this assault rifle. It is the equivalent of the FSS Hurricane in the AR category for its impressive range and effectiveness. The weapon doesn't have recoil, meaning you can fire at will and not lose sight of your target.

Undeniably, no other assault rifles can match up to the tremendous power the STB 556 holds. It may come close to the Kastov 545, but the Kastov beats it at having a better stopping power. Notwithstanding, the STB 556 has a strong fire rate that compares to the M4.

It may take a while to access this weapon, but it is worthwhile in the end. You will need to level up to rank 41. You will need to spend a few hours on the game and defeat a pool of opponents to reach this rank.

So, what's your take on our pick five best weapons in Call of Duty: Warzone 2? Which can't you wait to try out first? Are there other weapons we should add to the list? Let us know on our socials here or in the comments below.

As the world of gaming continues to evolve, new genres are constantly emerging. One of the most popular and exciting genres right now is battle royale. This type of game typically involves a large number of players who are dropped into a map and must fight until only one player or team is left standing. There are many different battle royale games out there, but we have narrowed it down to 5 of the best battle royale games of 2022! Keep reading to learn more about these games and find out which one is right for you.

5. Spellbreak

5 Best Battle Royale Games of 2022

  • Active players: 5500

Spellbreak may be a bit different from the rest of the games on the list, being a spell casting game. The gameplay mechanism for the game involves original magic-based combat inspired by the aesthetically fascinating art style. It offers smooth gameplay for those who want to take a break from constant gunplay. Despite not having guns involved in combat, the game still maintains the main battle royale concepts like squad-based missions, looting, and mapped terrain. Various platforms feature Spellbreak, such as PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Players engage in spellcasting combat where they can emit a variety of destructive spells against enemies. Experience the magical chaos that comes with each exciting match which in no way ever feels one-sided.Before each battle, players have to choose between a number of elemental gauntlets to equip themselves with. These elements include wind, ice, poison, and lightning. Players can combine certain elements with others to maximize attacks. For instance, a wave of toxic attack released toward enemies can be followed up by the fire to ignite a powerful attack. Besides that, players can acquire special powers such as flying and teleportation from runes. Participants don't have to worry about running low on ammo; to load up on abilities players only need to before initiating  the next attack.

4. Fortnite

Fortnite has been raking in players by the boatload since 2017.

  • Active players: 15 Million

Another popular game in the battle royale genre, garnering thousands of players every day, is Fortnite. It is also among the most streamed games on all streaming platforms. The graphics are bright and family-friendly, which works well for a larger demographic of gamers. The game first began as a 4 player shooting gunplay that involved players defending against legions of zombies with resource gathering and fort-building as part of the survival mission.

Developers went on to introduce Fortnite Battle Royale with new gameplay mechanics similar to PUBG, making improvements with every new season. Its battle royale gameplay features 100 players dropping on an island from all directions. As a shield closes in, players scramble for survival resources such as guns and shield portions. The featured map regularly evolves, which keeps Fortnite exciting, making it a huge attraction in the gaming community. The game also holds live events and features prominent artists like Travis Scott. Gamers can access Fortnite via PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, macOS, and PlayStation 4.

3. Apex Legends

apex legends mad maggie

  • Active players: 10 Million

Apex Legends is a multiple-award-winning multiplayer game with dynamic gameplay that distinguishes it from the rest on the list. Created by developers involved with creating the initial Call of Duty games, the game features fast-paced gameplay with strong, unique characters. With the introduction of character abilities, different modes, and additional characters, Apex Legends remains one of the best games in the battle royale genre this year. Players can access the game through various platforms, including Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Playstation 4.

Apex Legends is based on a fictional world named Titanfall, whose society is in conflict with an armed corporation seeking to dominate it. The game involves sci-fi concepts with players equipped with outstanding powers. Each power is unique to each character, such as healing powers for Lifeline, tracking abilities for Bloodhound, and Mirage's hologram capabilities. It maintains the same battle royale concepts as the other games of the genre, such as looting and hunting down opponents. It also features a revival mechanism applied to bring back players who have died in battle.

2. Call of Duty: War Zone

Call of Duty: Warzone is a free-to-play battle royale game that launched back in 2020.

  • Active players: 6 Million

Call of Duty first introduced battle royale to a previous game series in 2018 known as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in a game mode named Blackout. In Call of Duty: War Zone, the combat encounters are captivating even with the standard playtime. However, the battle royale game mode features more players than it did initially. A maximum of 150 players can join a single event which marks intense stand-offs among enemies. Obtaining helicopters and trucks can be a game-changer that determines the dynamics of some players over others.

Also, not forgetting the introduction of the Gulag duels in this series, which allows players to rejoin the game after being killed by fighting one-on-one matches. It's a feature that keeps players on edge and focused on surviving the longest. The game hosts cross-platform progression and play, which allows players to use the same account across different gaming platforms. Call of Duty: War Zone can be accessed through PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

1. PlayerUnknown's Battleground (PUBG)

5 Best Battle Royale Games of 2022

  • Active players: 42 Million

PUBG is one of the most popular battle royale games and has received several awards for this genre. The game representations offer realistic gameplay concepts and are still one of the most featured games on Stream.

The game gained serious public interest due to its online influence. It is available on many platforms, including PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Stadia. The iOS and Android version of PUBG has received additional features like more maps and added modifiers on the game's event mode. Most features in battle royale games include a manuscript from PUBG. Season 2 of Halo Infinite is expected to release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on May 3rd

We already know that Halo Infinite Season 2 will include a slew of new features. Some of this is in the form of in-game items, like new helmets for Mark VII armor but there are also new game modes mentioned. 343 Industries announced the “Last Spartan Standing” mode, which is 343's take on a Halo-like battle royale. However, further comments point out that there could be an even bigger Halo Infinite battle royale, yet to come.

One of the latest rumors, from a credible source, points towards a new battle royale mode on a massive scale. As pointed out by The Xbox Two podcast, host Jez Cordon of WindowsCentral mentioned that a Halo battle royale mode has been in the works for over two years. Cordon also stated that this was on a “Call of Duty: Warzone” like scale, implying that it would function as “a separate game.”.

All of these remarks come in the wake of recent rumors that Certain Affinity is behind the battle royale development. From Halo 2 onwards, the company has collaborated with 343 Industries to help develop Halo games. And on April 12th, the company's blog post stated, “We’ve been part of the Halo franchise for more than 15 years”. Certain Affinity went on to say “we’re honored to say we are deepening our relationship with 343 and have been entrusted with further evolving Halo Infinite in some new and exciting ways.”.

All of this news points towards a Certain Affinity developed battle royale for Halo Infinite. Despite that it is unlikely to appear in Season 2, Cordon believes it will be ready for Season 3. If that's the case, then all we can hope for is a quicker turnaround between seasons. Since it took over a year for Season 2 to come.

So do you think Halo Infinite will ever get its own battle royale? Let us know in the comments below or over on our socials here!

Gamer or not, you've probably encountered a round of Fortnite at some stage in the last four years. Although to be honest, it'd be pretty difficult to avoid it with the amount of media coverage it gets on a daily basis. Plus, with a constant flow of content being flushed into the platform, it's sort of hard to miss such a prominent kingpin within the multiplayer domain. And as far as tournaments go, well — the battle royale world is bigger than ever — with twice the amount of bouts and internationally recognised events than before.

With a total of 350 million users subscribed to the Epic Games phenomenon, people are still swarming the critically acclaimed world to soak up the latest updates that get uploaded on a regular basis. And now, as it stands, Fortnite has amassed a whopping $30 billion in revenue, making it one of the best-selling games on the market.

Fortnite: In a Nutshell

Fortnite, in a nutshell, is a battle royale game that launches 100 players into a world that spans 3.5KM in distance. Fleshing out with luscious woodlands, mining towns, lake retreats and randomized structures, each player must thrive to be the last one standing in a free-for-all skirmish. However, rather than diving into the battle with a complete loadout and a higher chance of dominating from the get-go, players must scavenge the nearby settlements for loot and gear to help sway the tide.

Of course, time does play a major role throughout the match, as beating around the bush can lead to a relatively quick death — made quicker by the fact that the map shrinks with each passing minute. However, after the grounds have been established and the wheels are in motion, players are able to build a fortress using the supplies they've gathered, or resort to boxing themselves in until the hourglass reveals its final grains. Until then, it really is just all-out warfare, plain and simple. The last one breathing snags the victory. Simple.

Fortnite: Battle Royale Explained

It's fair to say that Fortnite isn't the most innovative concept in the gaming industry. In fact, we've seen similar games rifle through the chamber and shot out at least a hundred times before. That being said, while Fornite isn't a pioneer to the renowned genre, it does boast the odd quirk that other titles fail to locate. For example, Fortnite allows players to build structures using the resources retrieved from the surrounding settlements. By doing so, the odds can easily be turned in the players favor when going toe to toe with an approaching enemy.

Although Fortnite does rustle up a few charming extras to the scene, the overall concept doesn't deviate from what we've all seen before. 100 players are ultimately launched from a flying bus (yes — a flying bus) into an enormous arena with nothing but their bare hands and black and white goal engraved into their heads. Survive at all costs, build structures to your advantage — and do whatever it takes to evade the almighty Storm Eye, which essentially crunches the map down to the final stand-off location. Simple enough, right? Well, kind of.

Tournaments & Prize Pools

Of all the eSports events in the world, Fortnite definitely stands as one of the wealthiest. Even for a game that launched back in 2017, the years leading up to now have been overwhelmingly kind to the battle royale chapter. With some of the biggest streamers backing the online front, Fortnite has become a complete cash cow for both fans and multiplayer fanatics alike. Of course, without the competitive events to back the success of the game, there really wouldn't be half the amount of hype to escalate it, to begin with.

Epic Games, while devoted to several other titles under their evolving belt, do like to keep the Fortnite calendar plastered with events throughout the four seasons. With that in mind, the one to keep a firm eye on is the Fortnite Champion Series, which puts out a bid to locate the best players from all regions of the world for one major showcase.

Events typically come with a variety of categories, ranging from solo bouts, duos, trios and squads. The best of the best ascend the leaderboard and thrash it out over one explosive grand finale, where a rather hefty sum of winnings lay in wait. And, I'll be honest with you — those hefty sums do usually sit around the $3 million band.

Fortnite has been raking in players by the boatload since 2017.

The Platforms

One of the great things about Fortnite, other than the mouth-watering prize pools that swarm each event, is that it can be played on pretty much every platform, Android included. However, while anyone can dive into the action from any section of the world, eSports events do typically gravitate towards console users, namely Xbox and PlayStation, with very little slack for PC ports. Of course, Epic Games do make the effort to incorporate the whole roster as opposed to fleshing out a single platform, though the Microsoft and Sony factions are undeniably the most used.

Stacking Against the Odds

While the battle royale theme is relatively easy to follow in terms of gameplay, goals and winnings — there is a lot more to take on board before sinking into that burning pocket of yours. Of course, getting to know the player base that keeps the platform afloat is the primary objective here, with the secondary task gravitating towards the dozens of live streams that flood most gaming platforms. By shovelling through plenty of gameplay hours and taking note of what makes each professional player tick, that next bet can effectively feel less risky.

Oh, and let's not forget the fact that Fortnite is also a free-to-play game, meaning it won't cost a penny to sink some personal hours into the game and iron out the kinks for yourself. Add Twitch and Fortnite Tracker into the mix and you're on your way to the next big payout. Here's hoping, anyway.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) was released in 2017, and is available for download on PC (Steam), PS4 and Xbox One. The game also has a Lite version for most basic computers, and another Mobile version to download on Android and iPhone phones (iOS ). Created by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene and developed by Bluehole, the title is one of the precursors of the Battle Royale genre. It has become a phenomenon and one of the most played games in the world. See below for questions and answers about PUBG.

What does PUBG mean?

PUBG is short for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which means “battleground for the unknown player”. The game was born out of a mod for Arma 3, and at the time was called PlayerUnknown’s Battle Royale. Its creator, Brendan Greene, was approached in 2016 by South Korean developer Bluehole, who showed interest in developing a game based on the concept.1

Thus, “PlayerUnknown's” comes from the nickname of Brendan Greene, while “Battlegrounds” was the name chosen by Bluehole to replace “Battle Royale”. The developer cannot use the name commercially, as Battle Royale is the name of a Japanese film released in 2000. Currently, PUBG is under the responsibility of PUBG Corp., a subsidiary of Bluehole.

In PUBG, each game has up to 100 players simultaneously. Everyone fighting against everyone to receive the most coins in the game and to be able to exchange for the items. The most important thing, according to experts, is to receive the glory of the “winner, winner, chicken, dinner”.

Where and when was PUBG released?

PUBG was released on early access on Steam in March 2017. The full game was released on December 21 of the same year. During early access, more than 15 million copies were sold. PUBG also became the first Steam game to have more than one million simultaneous players during one year, between September 2017 and 2018. The record was later surpassed by the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 beta.

PUBG Mobile is one of the greatest hits of the Battle Royale genre. (Image: PUBG Corporation)

The Xbox One version of PUBG was released on September 4, 2018. It reached the mark of one million copies sold in just three days. The PS4 launch took place on December 7, 2018. In all, PUBG has sold over 60 million copies since its launch.

How to play well?

When entering a match, after the waiting room, you will be on a plane and will have to parachute somewhere on the map. It is worth remembering that you start the game without weapons, equipment or supplies, which must be earned when exploring the most diverse places in the scenario.

Hence it is to run around (or use one of the vehicles that can be found), collect loot, and stay within the enclosed area. Yes, there is an enclosed area, which closes as time passes, and forces participants to meet and define who will be the last survivor. Whoever stays out of it after the end of time will suffer the consequences of the uninterrupted storm outside. Which causes more and more damage, with each closing of the circle of limitation. So be smart and remember to keep an eye on the circle count.

How many people play PUBG in the world?

According to the Steam Charts website, PUBG recorded an average of 308,400 players in December 2019. With a peak of 686,200 players. According to PCGamesN, PUBG Mobile, the version of Battle Royale for Android and iPhone (iOS), reached the mark of 400 million players in June of the same year, with 50 million players daily.

Armaments and customization

The game stands out for the large quantity and variety of weapons scattered on the map. They range from pistols, submachine guns, rifles and sniper rifles. Other than that, there are many items to customize the weapons. Like holographic, precision sights, extended ammunition clips. Throughout the game the player can find bulletproof vests, medical kits, helmets, cans of energy drinks, and other items that will be of great help in the game.

Personalization is one of the strengths of PUBG Mobile. (Image: PUBG Corporation)

What is PUBG Lite/Mobile?

PUBG Mobile is the free version of the game for phones with iOS system (iPhone) and Android devices. The game has all the features of the version for PC (Windows), Xbox One and PS4.

The basic difference in PUBG Lite is to have more limited visuals. So you could run smoothly on mobile devices and simpler desktops. Mainly to serve a slice of the Southeast Asian market, where it is more difficult to assemble state-of-the-art equipment.

Curiosity

With several successful mods and even participations advising in the creation of other games, like the H1Z1, Brendan was improving his ability to design systems and program. Whoever hired him and assigned a team so that he could create PUBG was Bluehole Studio, from South Korea. On the day he was hired, Brendan had just turned forty years old.

Development was not easy and the first version, still with several problems, was released on Steam. One of the largest platforms for digital distribution of PC games. Bluehole spent nothing on advertising or marketing. However, the quality and originality of the game spoke for itself.

PUBG's success was very rapid. (Image: PUBG Corporation)

Brendan revealed that they bought champagne for when they won their first million. What they didn't expect is that it would happen in just six hours after launch. The success was colossal and, until today, PUBG holds the record for the largest number of simultaneous players on Steam. With a peak of over two million players.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is the new craze in the gaming world. Released on August 4 for PC (Windows 10 via Steam) and PS4 (available free until September 1 for PS Plus subscribers), the indie game is produced by Mediatonic and published by Devolver Digital. Its simple gameplay, “cotton candy” graphics and memes helped make it a success. In the first 24 hours after its launch, the game already had 1.5 million users.

Fall Guys is already a hit with little release time. (Image: Fall Guys)

The game consists of a competition between 60 players in eliminatory rounds, until a winner. The rounds have different themes: there are thirteen different game modes, chosen at random. Obstacles such as giant balls, pulleys with hammers, moving walls, cylindrical bridges and other shapes inspired by the British gameshow “It's a Knockout”.

Dr. DisRespect, the controversial streamer who was banned and returned last week. He got into the Fall Guys wave in his first broadcast after his return. Look:

YouTube Video

The gameplay

The great thing about Fall Guys is to combine very simple gameplay with colorful graphics and without great details. This makes the game attractive to different audiences. It is a battle royale, but without some striking features of the genre. There is no circle that closes on the map and the use of weapons and equipment for example. However, the simplicity of Fall Guys hides how easy it is to be angry at the results of the match, as it is a very simple game to play and also very simple to lose. Any slip can eliminate you, making your effort after arduous rounds to be in vain.

Between prank games, jigsaw puzzles, crazy racing and soccer with a giant ball (which even resembles Rocket League), Fall Guys offers constant chaos to their players. Its fast pace with many colors in view also makes it visibly attractive. Which also justifies so many memes in the game.

The simple graphics and good gameplay is one of the positive aspects of the new game. (Image: fall Guys)

At other times, Fall Guys can take their players seriously, or their players can take each other seriously. The expression “fall guy” refers to someone who is easily deceived, so they always take advantage of him.

Server problems

Fall Guys' success came at a cost. The game does not yet have a server robust enough to support the number of players. This caused several complaints in the matches, mainly on the PC. Mediatonic decided to present players with items available only by microtransactions to players who experienced problems with the server. The developer is still working to bring Fall Guys to other platforms and add crossplay functionality. Thus, players from different platforms participate in the same match.

“We're really sorry for the poor experience today. We kept seeing things improve as we fixed things, but with record numbers of players today, new issues have emerged. We're now moving into maintenance mode so that we can implement a longer-term fix.”

“We're super grateful for your patience, and we can't thank you enough for supporting us through these launch issues. Once everything is back online, we'll be working on extra rewards for you all to show our appreciation. We will post news here as soon as its available!”

Game rewards

Completing all levels, the player will have won a total of five fantasy bottoms, five fantasy tops, seven patterns, two faces, seven colors, two gestures, a celebration, 19,500 credits and three crowns.

Colors

The colors are like the skin of the characters, but the choice does not change the face. There are seven colors available: gum, raspberry, citrus, metallic delight, starry night, marine dream and rainbow juice.

Gum, Raspberry, Citrus and Metallic Delight. (Image: André Fauth)

Costumes

The costumes are worn over the skin and conquered by pairs throughout the Battle Pass. Each is divided between top and bottom, and it is possible to combine two different pairs. For example, use the Hot Dog pants with the head of the Colored Pigeon. Altogether there are five pairs: Colored Pigeon, Hunter, Cracker, Hot Dog and Chicken.

Colorful Pigeon is one of the costumes. (Image: André Fauth)

Pattern and Face

Patterning is the design that covers the character's skin. It is not possible to use more than one at the same time. There are seven patterns existing in the Battle Pass: Hunter, Camouflage, Pirate, Zebrinha, Topology, Cells and Dripping Paint.

Other rewards

In addition to two gestures and a celebration for use in matches, it is possible to unlock crowns and credits, which can be used to unlock cosmetic items. Credits are earned as you play and move up the Battle Pass or in exchange for real money. Crowns are obtained through victories and the Battle Pass.

Ubisoft this week revealed the launch of Hyper Scape, its new free Battle Royale. The game was created by developers of Rainbow Six: Siege, the company's successful FPS. Still in the testing phase, the title was released to be broadcast by some personalities from Twitch and YouTube. Reaching half a million viewers in less than thirty minutes, the event was a success. In addition, keys to the test were being dropped during Twitch broadcasts.

YouTube Video

Based on the futuristic scenario of New Arcadia, Hyper Space is scheduled to launch its open beta on July 12 on PCs. For PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, no date has been specified yet. – “We know about the hype of gamers by our newly announced Hyper Scape! Rest assured! The game

Built from the ground up as an interactive streaming show, Hyper Scape promises to change the way we watch video games, allowing streamers and content creators to interact with audiences like never before. The company says that every battle and every victory will be unique thanks to the participation of fans around the world.

So far there are two modes available in the testing phase: Crown Rush Squad and Dark Haze Solo. In the first, teams of three members battle for the domain of the Crown that is in the center of the map or for the elimination of all opponents. The solo mode is in the best style, each one for itself. The producer promises two more modes until the beta is released.

Battle Royale also shows a new approach with players eliminated. After being shot down, it is possible to roam the map in a way that does not allow combat. However, it offers the possibility to feed your team with information until a respawn point is made available.

According to the official website, Contenders (game characters) will be able to use HACKS. It will be a set of lootable skills that create powerful options for different play styles. From the establishment of MINES looking for their enemies, to the use of INVISIBILITY for a stealthy approach. This stealth can be to propel yourself in the air before hitting your opponent with SLAM. Hacks not only change the way you play, they also offer the necessary advantages to win the competition.

Electronic Arts revealed that Apex Legends was the most downloaded free PS4 game of 2019. That means it beat the tough competition from Fortnite to win the crown. The announcement caused a stir, but is Apex Legends really more popular than Fortnite?

A cultural phenomenon

Fortnite became a huge hit game when it launched in 2017. It attracted more than 125 million players in its first year, and digital revenue reached an unprecedented US$ 2.4 billion in 2018. SuperData revealed that the game had annual revenue higher than any other title in history. Leaving you ahead of Dungeon Fighter, League of Legends and Pokemon GO.

In early 2019, Fortnite was established as a cultural phenomenon, loved by rappers, celebrities and casual gamers. Then came Apex Legends to provide players with an attractive alternative. Critics liked their fast-paced squad game, elemental progression and compelling character base.

Apex Legends accumulated more than 25 million downloads in its first week and suddenly, Fortnite's obituaries began to appear. When the player count reached 50 million in a month, many commentators predicted that it would soon usurp Fortnite as the most prominent title in the battle royale world.

However, it didn't quite work out that way. Fortnite producer Epic Games was determined to overcome this challenger to his throne, and quickly announced a US$ 100 million investment in a series of professional Fortnite tournaments that would take place throughout 2019, culminating in the World Cup in US$ 30 million Fortnite.

Fortnite World Cup 2019 had a huge audience. (Image: Fortnite Twitter)

Players realized they could become millionaires by playing Fortnite, and many returned to the game. The Apex Legends novelty disappeared a little, and Fortnite was back in the driver's seat. It received a huge increase in publicity after several teenagers actually made millions of dollars at the World Cup, and ended 2019 on a high.

An interesting fact, earlier this month, Epic announced that Fortnite now has more than 350 million registered players. This is approximately the population of the United States. There is no fear of its popularity waning, as it provided legions of fans with entertainment during the coronavirus blockade. In April 2020, players spent more than 3.2 billion hours in the game.

A game to master

Apex Legends simply cannot compete with Fortnite. The most recent milestone announced by Electronic Arts came in October 2019, when it revealed that 70 million people had downloaded the Apex. He was able to secure more PS4 downloads than Fortnite in 2019, because many people had already downloaded Fortnite before 2019.

It appears that Apex peaked a few months after its launch. It won 50 million players in one month and then took another six months to add another 20 million to that count. Electronic Arts probably would have revealed details of its player count in its recent financial update had it been close to fulfilling its initial promise and usurping Fortnite.

Would Apex Legends be a successful passing game? (Image: EA)

Apex Legends remains a popular battle royale title, and there is no denying its success last year. However, Fortnite is more popular than Apex Legends in all available metrics. Could that change in the future? At the moment, Fortnite has a dominant lead over its rivals in the popularity game, and its two closest opponents – PUBG and Apex Legends – have a lot of work to do to close the gap. However, Apex is a much more recent title than PUBG and Fortnite, and it still has a lot of potential for future growth.

It has not yet reached the lucrative mobile market. EA and Respawn have plans to launch the game for mobile devices, which represents a great opportunity. EA CEO Andrew Wilson said it would not be released until fiscal 2021. It starts on October 1, 2020, for the company, so we will have to wait and see success.

Fortnite and PUBG have enjoyed tremendous success on mobile, so Apex Legends should receive a significant boost as soon as it is available on these devices. It also needs to make a joint effort to break the Chinese market, where PUBG currently reigns supreme. It is yet to be released on Nintendo Switch – another successful area of Fortnite – so there are many new horizons for Apex Legends to explore.

A long battle ahead

Wilson confirmed that EA will invest considerable time and resources to ensure that Apex Legends enjoys a healthy future. “Apex Legends is a great long-term franchise for us. Since launch, we have significantly expanded the team that works on the game and continues to grow,” he said. “The Apex Legends community is growing, with more than 70 million players. We are focused on expanding to new mobile platforms and new geographies. In addition, we will launch a competitive Apex gaming program, which we will share details about soon.”

There is also a danger that Epic Games will become complacent. He has already shocked fans by abandoning plans for a Fortnite 2020 World Cup as a result of the coronavirus crisis, plunging the professional scene into chaos.

Games like League of Legends, CS: GO and Dota 2 have remained popular as a direct consequence of their success in the competitive gaming arena. It is interesting to see Fortnite hot and cold when it comes to esports. If you check out Fortnite bets here, you won't see many big tournaments on the horizon. Apex Legends has an expanding e-sports scene. It's actually been more profitable for players than Fortnite in 2020.

Dota 2 is an example of a game well established by its fans. (Image: Dota 2)

New rivals are forming, and the onus will be on Epic Games and EA to invest in securing the long-term future of their titles. Both companies are in strong financial positions. Fortnite and Apex Legends recently released patches with almost universal acclaim. This battle should continue for many years, and Apex Legends should have the opportunity to move forward in the future.

Karakin didn't come out of the blue. The devs have already teased us via social media before giving us this badass reveal trailer. Karakin is a desert map set somewhere in North Africa. This will be games 5th map, along with Miramar, Vikendi, Sanhok, and Erangel. Karakin is 2 x 2 km in size, which means it is much smaller than other maps and perfect for fast-paced games. It has also been confirmed that Vikendi will not be available in season 6, but will definitely reappear in the later seasons. However, custom matches in Vikendi will still be available.

If you just can't wait for it, you can already check Karakin out on a test server. Aside from 5 villages on the shores, much of the map is an open mountainous area, which will be perfect for sniping practice. There are claustrophobic underground bunkers spread throughout the map.

PUBG Season 6 Mechanic: Black Zone

Karakin also comes with a twist – a new mechanic called Black Zone that will completely transform the area inside it. The buildings inside it will sustain big damage or be completely destroyed, so you will have to constantly be on your feet. Devs have developed it to prevent excessive camping and we highly welcome it. Black Zone will also evolve in real-time throughout the match, so a house that was there just a minute ago may become totally flattened. Buildings that get destroyed will be represented with X on the minimap. It will also be totally random, resulting in a different experience every time you play. Watch out for the sound of a siren and quickly evacuate if you are inside the purple circle.

Sticky Bombs And Penetrable Walls

Karakin will also have one unique weapon – Sticky Bombs. You will use them on various Breach points, like weak walls and floors, to create new paths. This will definitely add a new tactical element in the game, as you now have the option to attack enemies from various unexpected angles. Sticky Bombs will also uncover various secret areas that might contain useful loot, so keep your eyes open.

Devs have also decided to add bullet penetration, which will work on the weakest walls in Karakin. Lastly, the new flying vehicle called Motor Glider will also be available in Karakin. The vehicle has 2 seats, making it easy for your teammate to spread fire on enemies below. There are dozens of small things added and you can see full patch notes here.

PUBG Is Here To Stay

PUBG is still very much in race with other Battle Royale games like Apex Legends and Fortnite. Remember, Season 5 was launched in October of 2019, and we've already got a new one. Season 6 is coming out at the end of the month, on January 25th.
