Rocket League is a game unlike any other. Although it could be compared to FIFA because it is, at its core, simply a soccer game. However, things are taken up a notch when acrobatic and high-flying cars replace people on the pitch. That simple concept has grown Rocket League into a massive Esports game with tournaments all over the world and even University teams awarding scholarships to rising stars. And once you start playing Rocket League, you'll come to find it is much harder to execute the same plays the pros are doing. Surely enough you'll need some practice before you're doing double taps of the wall, and these beginner tips are a great way to start.

5. Double Jumps

It's no secret that we want to fly around in Rocket League and score spectacular ariel goals. However, before you can do so, you must first learn the fundamentals of movement and ariel play. Because it pays to be the fastest and most dexterous driver on the track, capable of playing both ends of the field. And if you want to effortlessly switch between offense and defense, you'll need to perform double jumps. You do this by pressing your jump button (A on Xbox and X on Playstation), then pressing it again to do a second jump. If you do this, without flicking your left joystick, you'll simply pop straight up in the air.

However, if you flick the left joystick while performing your second jump, you will flip in the direction you indicated with the joystick. Give it a few tries and experiment with the different directions you can double jump. Because the more comfortable you become with double jumping, the easier you will move when you are low on boost. Believe us, this is one of those beginner tips that many players discover far too late in the game. But once you get the hang of it, throw some boost into the mix, and you're not far from performing ariels.

4. Free Roll and Ariels

There will be times when you get bumped, miss a ball, or run out of boost which sends you flying uncontrollably through the air. And while you may feel like you have no control, Rocket League cars are kind of like cats, in that, they always land on their feet. You see the best pros always land wheels first so they can get right back into the action. And they do this by utilizing the Free Roll mechanic (press and hold L1 on PlayStation or LB on Xbox).

If you hold this button down while in the air, you will be able to effortlessly rotate your car. And you'll want to do this to help you recover when you get knocked flat on your back or sky-high in the air. Because you can jump back into the play much faster if you land wheels down. Rather than barreling a couple of times before you come to a complete stop.

You'll also learn how to direct your ariel shots this way. You can control the direction of your car in the air with your left joystick if you press Jump, then hold Boost and Free Roll. This is more of an advanced tip rather than beginner tips, but it covers the fundamentals of doing ariels. Which we know you're all eager to learn. That's why if you want to get good at ariel's, you'll need to keep practicing this mechanic over and over until you are comfortable with it.

3. Boost and Boostpads

Being the fastest in Rocket League can pay off in a variety of situations. Nine times out of ten, the player with boost, as opposed to the player without boost, wins the fight. And if you're a goalie, you'll almost certainly want some boost. As a result, one of the most important beginner tips we can give you is to always have boost. There are six main boosts on the map to max out your boost meter, and they respawn 10 seconds after someone grabs one.

If you can't find any boost, you can get it quickly from the smaller boost pads spread across the pitch. These only give 12 boosts, not even a quarter, but they're everywhere and can quickly stack up to give you 30-40 boosts, just enough to make a play. These are also good options if you believe that grabbing a boost in the corner will take you out of the play and put your team in a bad position. So, while it's important to always be full on boost, don't prioritize grabbing boost over hitting the ball. Always think ball first, then boost second.

2. Rotations

If you're ever getting flack in Rocket League, it's probably because you're not following your rotations. It's an unspoken strategy, but knowing that every player follows rotations when hopping into a match with a random squad is huge for beginner tips. That is, two players will push offense, while one will always be on defense. Then, if a player is low on boost or simply out of position in the offense, they will fly back to the defense (by double jumping). This allows the defensive player to come in with a full boost and apply more pressure.

This way, no players are ever caught behind the play. With that, you don't have three guys committing to a ball, leaving your net exposed. It's also common to have one player play hard offense in the corner, while the other two sit at mid and further back to play their passes. In any case, they are covering the entire length of the field. Then, when you see an offensive player return for a reset, that's your call to jump into the play.

1. Free Play is Your Best Friend

It may not appear so, but practicing all of these skills in free play is one of the best beginner tips we can give you. They have various practice drills for shooting, passing, and goaltending to help you improve your game. And you'll notice that doing these practice drills will help you improve much faster than getting one odd shot in a game that you have to scramble for. This allows you to slow down and really get to know your car and its movement with repetitions.

In addition to practicing in free play, the next best thing is to be creative and push yourself. Rocket League is a game where the impossible can become possible, but only if you try. So, don't be afraid to go up for an ariel ball even if you miss it; you have to push yourself to discover your limits. When it comes down to it, Rocket League is all about pushing yourself over and over again, trying new things until they feel comfortable. Evidently, that's why Free Play is your best friend.

At some point in the process of developing a run-of-the-mill racing game, one team made the call to banish the clichés and pave the way for something much more brutal and bombastic. And before long, rockets were fastened to minivans, hydraulics were installed on ice cream trucks — and the whole idea of racing was swapped out for mindless demolition and enthralling combat.

Fast-forward a few years, and we've got a whole jungle of vehicular combat games in the palm of our hand. And let me tell you — we're not exactly getting bored of piling them up on our shelves, either. But which of the many stack the highest on our list? Which titles are worth picking up in 2021 and rediscovering all over again? Well, strap yourself in tight — because we're pulling out the big guns. Here are five of the craziest vehicular combat games of all time, ranked.

5. Rocket League

There came a point where simply booting a ball into the back of the net just wasn't enough. There needed to be more of a wow factor, and it needed something outlandish to help separate it from the bog-standard games in the sports genre. And so, somewhere along the way, developer Psyonix came up with the idea to incorporate rocket-powered cars into the mix. Bundled in with neon domes for arenas and a pinball-like sphere for a ball, Rocket League sprung to life as a new force to be reckoned with.

But let's talk about the vehicular combat aspect of the game. Although heavily focused on the soccer side of things, combat does play a minor role in each passing match. And by that, I mean players basically reap havoc by colliding into one another in a desperate attempt to gain possession of the ball. It's essentially a pit of fire and smoke, neon and lasers. Actually scoring goals, on the other hand, well — that's more of a secondary objective. Now tell me, who wouldn't want to take part in something like that? It's bonkers, it's ballistic — and it's basically the reason FIFA lost a boatload of players in 2015.

4. Jak X: Combat Racing

Jak and Daxter certainly took a dark turn after meshing with the second chapter in the series. And after Renegade, everything just sort of wound into a thread of crimson textures and steampunk settlements, effectively severing the original charm that made The Precursor Legacy well-loved in the first place. Following on from that, Naughty Dog conjured up a vehicular combat entry that would go on to challenge the likes of Twisted Metal and other top-tier rivals in the genre. The rest, as they say, was history.

Of course, in a nutshell, Jak X: Combat Racing is basically a souped up version of Mario Kart, only with more rockets than banana peels and what have you. And while winning a race is an objective in itself — annihilating a spool of opponents, on the other hand, stacks even higher on the list of priorities. And let me tell you — causing carnage out of the track has never been more of a blast — especially with Jak at the helm. Remaster, anyone? Surely it needs to happen in 2022, right?

3. Cel Damage

Cel Damage was one of those games that either built bridges or burned them, depending on which track you picked, and how sneaky you were with the tools you had from the get-go. Just think Mario Kart's Rainbow Road, only with more of a demolition derby sort of twist instead of an open circuit. Throw in some otherworldly weapons, cheeky catchphrases and some wacky arenas — and you've got yourself the basic premise of Cel Damage.

While the concept wasn't anything completely out of the box, Cel Damage was a pretty addictive entry to the vehicular combat world, and an all-time favourite amongst multiplayer pools. Unfortunately, despite it being incredibly popular way back in 2001 — a full-on reboot has yet to be ignited on upgraded systems. A HD version, however, can be found in the darkest corners of most stores. So, you know, that's something.

2. Mad Max

As much as Warner Bros. tried to force Mad Max and its textbook Arkham-style fighting mechanics down our throats, its explosive vehicular combat just sort of hogged the spotlight and claimed the win from the moment we hit start. But that isn't to say we complained about its ramped up usage of it. In fact, we were pretty thrilled to have a game so dedicated to such a thing. But as it turned out, the overall game actually slipped the radar for most fans of the genre.

On top of its mind-bending, looter-shooter journey, as well as its ambitious melee combat system that flowed from the same vein as Arkham, Mad Max also boasted a tonne of customizable elements for its vehicular combat. And after upgrading to a certain level, the whole thing just became an endless grind across sand and storm as a rebel in buggy. Sorry, Magnum Opus. And to be fair, that's all the game needed to be a massive success. It narrowed its focus on something — and it executed it to the finest degree.

1. Twisted Metal

Of course, you probably saw this one coming. Twisted Metal: it's one of those series that has been passed around by gamers for decades, and yet still hasn't been remade in recent years despite its blatant following. But it has, however, spawned countless spin-offs and local ports. Granted, not since 2012 — but it's better than nothing at all.

With a diverse roster of characters, a selection of well equipped vehicles, and a whole carousel of battlefields — it's clear the series has poured a wealthy amount of content into its ongoing development. Now, whether there'll be another sequence to the critically acclaimed series or not is another question, and one that most definitely spirals on the end of our tongues. Either way, I think we can all agree that another entry to the Twisted Metal kingdom wouldn't exactly go amiss in a community that longs for a handout.

As a genuinely addictive title with a captivating concept to bolster it, the soccer-racer extravaganza wasn't exactly holding back when tearing up the market. Fast-forward to the present day and the game has amassed global recognition and a whole series of competitive events to host under its belt.

The beauty of Rocket League is that it's played on all platforms across the board. And as far as the competitive community operates, the game can be enjoyed on both console and PC. But having said that, most tournaments do tend to favor the PC port, with pre-approved controllers to play with (whether it be a DualShock or Xbox pad). To shed a little extra light on that — roughly 80% of professional players will ideally aim for a controller, whereas the remaining 20% will opt for KBM.

While Rocket League may not be as big as FIFA (or any other competitive title for that matter), there is quite a lot of interest in the platform that supports it.
