the best racing games on playstation 5 may

Vroom, vroom, vroom! It's that time of month again when we rank the best racing games on PlayStation 5. There are numerous racing games available for the PlayStation 5. Some are old, while others are new. New games are not always the best. Neither are the old ones. As a result, the need to constantly keep up with the best racing games remains stronger than ever.

If you're wondering which racing games on PlayStation 5 to play this month, whether street, kart, off-road, real-life, or more, look no further than these best racing games on PlayStation 5 in May 2023. These racing games are fast and furious, with potentially endless hours of adrenaline-fueled racing.

5. F1 2021

F1® 2021 | Launch Trailer

The F1 series has stayed on course over the years, constantly delivering top-notch real-life simulation experiences for fans worldwide. The upcoming F1 2023, set to release on June 16th, 2023, has a lot of gamers wide-eyed, waiting to see for themselves all the hype around it come to life. F1 2022, released on June 28th, 2022, didn’t quite sit well with fans after numerous complaints of buggy sub parts and a generally subpar experience. Consequently, all eyes are on F1 2023 to fulfill most, if not all, expectations. That said, I have to say F1 2021 still does it for me.

F1 2021 is the official game for the 2021 Formula One and Formula Two Championships. Every major cog needed to make the whole game run smoothly works as it should. No need to comb through YouTube videos to get started. The AI responds naturally on track, and you can even adjust the AI cars’ difficulty from easy to expert if you’d like to throw some hardcore competition into the mix.

Furthermore, F1 2021 looks finger-licking good. Players can customize in the most in-depth of ways. Day and night cycles mimic natural happenings perfectly, like the way the clouds part to give way to the sun’s rays that bounce off the tracks all glimmery. Overall, it’s a much-needed realistic game that makes you feel like an F1 racer behind the wheel, even today.

4. Wreckfest

Wreckfest - Launch Trailer | PS5

If you’d much rather get down and dirty, throwing all caution about the real-life championships to the wind, then definitely take a look at Wreckfest. It’s a serious race, except all seriousness is directed toward utter mayhem. As far as destructive racing goes, Wreckfest takes the crown home.

Firstly, each run into opponents’ cars is as real as it can be. Cars really do take damage, spinning out of control and bursting tires. The more demolition you sustain, the more likely it is that you’ll finish racing on the rims. By far and large, Wreckfest’s damage modeling exceeds expectations, so much so that shredding other people’s cars feels refreshing to do.

Besides demolishing opponents’ cars, Wreckfest does astoundingly well at employing sophisticated physics and vehicle handling. It adds in-depth upgrades and customizations that feel progressive. There are almost always new ways to demolish cars or reinforce your own so you can sustain damage for longer. You can add bumpers, side protectors, or you can forego all that and focus on honing your speed. It just never gets dull here.

3. Gran Turismo 7

Gran Turismo 7 - Announcement Trailer | PS5

The latest Gran Turismo is a blast. Titled Gran Turismo 7, it’s the eighth mainline entry in the Gran Turismo series and the best one to play on PlayStation 5. If you’re a competitive racer, Gran Turismo 7 is the best place to show off your skills. Players often share close races, all thanks to iconic tracks, classic cars, and modern touch-ups that do all the heavy lifting for you.

Casual racers can have the time of their lives too. Simply jump behind the wheel of any of the cars and experience the look and feel to which only a few other racing games can compare. The visuals are gorgeously displayed at crispy, smooth 4K 60 fps performance rates. You can choose what works for you, whether classic or contemporary cars, fan-favorite GT Simulation, Sport mode, or more racing options. Either way, Gran Turismo 7 sets high standards; it’s pretty hard to see how future games can compete.

2. Hot Wheels Unleashed

Hot Wheels Unleashed - Gameplay Trailer | PS5, PS4

Kart racing isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. If you’re a fan of karting, check out Hot Wheels Unleashed. This 2021 racing game makes the most of the Hot Wheels universe, bringing to life the addictive, fun arcade-style racing from back in the day. It’s the perfect way to reminisce about special childhood moments and unleash streams of nostalgia.

Hot Wheels Unleashed has plenty going for it, including a superb collection of flashy cars, spectacular tracks, and more. Each car has its own driving style and personality. Plus, a varying rarity for those with a knack for collecting. Bottom line, Hot Wheels Unleashed perfectly simulates old-school fast-paced arcade racing in the undying love for Hot Wheels toy-car chaotic races.

1. Riders Republic

Riders Republic - Deep Dive Trailer | PS5, PS4

There are no hard and fast rules for racing games, so why not try out Riders Republic for a change? This is a sports game that is filled to the brim with adventure. It’s curated around an open-world playground for extreme sporting events. The fun comes when you bring friends along for the ride. Perhaps you prefer wingsuit flying, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, or more; any extreme sport you can think of is probably part of Riders Republic‘s repertoire.

Riders Republic offers so much variety that it’s hard not to find the racing competition that makes your heart sing. And when you do, you can engage in off-course, mass racing, or other frantic, adrenaline-fueled ways the developers aim for. Multiplayer arenas can hold up to 64 players simultaneously. Or, perhaps you like a smaller crowd of 6v6, or, better yet, solo career mode. Either way, there seems to be no other better way to really get that fast-and-furious mood up and running.
