5 Best Action RPGs on Xbox Game Pass

Updated on

Action RPGs are a great way to get interesting skill trees while still enjoying fast-paced combat. In many ways, action RPGs are a perfect marriage of two genres. This is why we have seen more titles come out that fit this label in recent years. Even some big-name franchises have embraced RPG mechanics into their games to create a deeper gameplay experience. This allows players to have more control over how they fight. Best of all, the RPGs below are free from harsh grinding and have smooth systems to keep you engaged. Best of all, every one of these games is currently free with Xbox Game Pass.

5. Scarlet Nexus

Scarlet Nexus an action RPG on Xbox Game Pass that revolves around two different main characters. You can choose between playing as Kasane or Yuto, who have different experiences in the game. Once you beat one route, you can go and play through the opposite one. The game is set in a futuristic setting where you use psychokinesis to fight. This gives you the ability to unleash unique combos to take down enemies. Of course, your favorite powers can be upgraded to be more useful in battle using the skill tree. You also have different party members who can assist you in battle, much like many other JRPGs.

The story of the game revolves around the OSF, which defends humanity. You are a member of this unit and are there to fight mutants. As you progress farther into the story, the world around you gets more complex. You must master using your abilities to make it through the game and spend your points wisely to build a character you love.

4. Assasins Creed Origins

Assassins Creed Origins takes you back into the past and allows you to explore Egypt. This is a huge open-world game that really gives you control over how you play. There are tons of different ways to take on enemies. Depending on how you invest in your skill tree, you can create a version of Bayek that plays exactly how you want. Like previous games in the series, your goal is to uncover the memories of this assassin. You will play through parts of Bayek's life, including some of the most stressful moments he lived through. As a result, you will also meet historical figures like Cleopatra.

Bayek is a Medjay that is charged with protecting Egypt by taking down targets who oppose Cleopatra. To do this, you must hunt down and assassinate several dangerous opponents. If you get bored of following the main mission, though, then you can indulge in the huge open world. There are plenty of quests that you can pick up throughout Egpyt. You can also choose to do things like hunt in order to craft better gear.

3. Fable II

Fable II is an action RPG that gained mass popularity when it launched on Xbox 360. The game lets you make your own hero and embark on an adventure to say the world. As a hero, you possess special abilities that were thought to be extinct. You must gather the other three heroes and take back Albion. You can choose to play a variety of classes and mix things up to create a powerful character that slaughters every enemy you encounter. The game is also made for co-op, so you can bring a friend along with you as you decide which path to take. You can choose to be a good, evil, or neutral hero as the game gives you choices in how you want to handle the different quests.

While the main story is fun, there is a ton of side content in Fable. For example, you can buy up all the houses in town and rent them out or get married. There are also a ton of side quests for you to engage in, including one that will have you hunting down gargoyles for hours. Best of all, the game doesn't take itself all that seriously, so it gives you the perfect dose of comedy.

2. Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is one of the most well-known RPGs on Xbox Game Pass. While some players will argue that New Vegas is better, Fallout 3 is a great way to introduce yourself to the franchise. The game drops you Vault 111, where you grow up. Things aren't really that great, however, as your dad escapes one day leaving you behind. You follow in his footsteps and leave the fault to enter into the wasteland of the former US capital. As it turns out, nuclear war has greatly changed the landscape around you, and mutants wander the land. You must pick through perks, choose your weapons, and learn to deal with radiation.

As a result of the massive size of this game, there are dozens of hours of gameplay available. You can follow the main story or indulge in the countless side quests to learn more about the post-apocalyptic world around you.

1. Mass Effect

Mass Effect is an action RPG giant that every Xbox Game Pass user needs to play. This is a sci-fi series that lets you make your own choices and even romance several of the in-game characters. Commander Shepard is one of the most iconic main characters in gaming, and Mass Effect may just be the greatest sci-fi RPG ever released. In addition, the game has a good mix of action combat, gunplay, and RPG mechanics that made it truly stick out among the competitors of its time.

Like most games on this list, you are tasked with saving the universe. Shepard has a vision of the apocalypse and must set out to prevent it before the Reapers appear. Of course, this is easier said than done, especially with Cerberus trying to gain control over the deadly threat. If you do get bored of the main story, then don't worry, you can just concentrate on the side quests.
