Remnant II: Everything We Know

Gunfire Games and Gearbox Publishing have officially thrown down the gauntlet and set to work on creating a sequel to the universally renowned third-person action RPG Remnant: From the Ashes. Aptly titled Remnant II, the forthcoming chapter will take players back to the forsaken realms—fractured worlds in which colossal foes roam and danger looms on the edge of every corner. This is where you, once again, will learn to find your feet and defy the odds of surviving the onslaught.

So, what more do you need to know about the upcoming sequel, other than the fact that it's bigger, badder, and no doubt tougher than its original? Well, here's everything we've been able to gather on it since its appearance at The Game Awards event last year. Remnant II: what is it, and when can we expect to see it drop on consoles and PC?

What Is Remnant II?

Remnant II is an upcoming third-person action RPG by Gunfire Games. As a sequel, players will be invited to delve even deeper into its monstrous core and go toe-to-toe with the realms' numerous creatures and sadistic trials. In a bid to stop the beasts that wallow in the darkest shadows, you will step forth either with a friend or with nothing more than the clothes on your back, and develop a skill set strong enough to whittle down the masses. Easier said than done, of course.

In the words of Gunfire Games: “Remnant II is the sequel to the best-selling game Remnant: From the Ashes that pits survivors of humanity against new deadly creatures and god-like bosses across terrifying worlds. Play solo or co-op with two other friends to explore the depths of the unknown to stop an evil from destroying reality itself. To succeed, players will need to rely on their own skills and those of their team to overcome the toughest challenges and to stave off humanity’s extinction.”

Story

Remnant II will take place in the darkest crevices of a forsaken world—a layered hellscape that will let you “explore the depths of the unknown to stop an evil from destroying reality itself.” Apart from that, not a great deal is known about the story—only that it will take players even deeper into the boss and beast-riddled nexus of horrifying realms either alone or with a friend. As for how many layers or worlds that'll make the cut is still anybody's guess. That said, given the fact the first chapter did go on to boast a solid 55 hours of content to shovel through, one can only begin to imagine how much the sequel will be in receipt of.

Gameplay

Remnant: From the Ashes was initially billed as a “Dark Souls with guns” sort of deal, which in turn led it to become one with the Soulslike community. Makes sense, given the complexity of the enemies, and not to mention the absurdly harsh difficulty curve it adopted. If that is to be the base from which the sequel will work from, then we've got a pretty rough idea of how its gameplay will roll out. Shock horror — it won't be easy, and it'll no doubt foster a ludicrous amount of colossal foes to boot.

“Branching quest lines, augments, crafting, and loot rewards will test the resolve of even the most hardened players in dynamically generated dungeons and areas. Playthroughs will feel challenging, varied, and rewarding as players succeed against unrelenting odds,” the description adds.

Going by what we've caught so far, Remnant II will divide its time between both melee and ranged combat. What's more, it'll also feature an “expanded Archetype system”—an upgraded palette of “passive bonuses and stunning powers” that will allow for you to experiment with various playstyles throughout the campaign.

Development

Gunfire Games first announced its intention to bring a sequel to Remnant: From the Ashes at The Game Awards 2022. Since setting it in stone, the studio has released a slew of previews, as well as its plans to bring it to next-gen consoles and PC at some point later this year. A final release date has yet to be announced, though it was revealed that it would be shaping up for a summer window.

Right now, we can't say for sure whether or not there'll be an Xbox One or PlayStation 4 port of the game. A Switch version though, perhaps, as Remnant: From the Ashes did in fact release on the handheld consoles back in the beginning of 2023.

So, has Remnant II caught your eye? If so, then you'll be pleased to know that Gunfire Games did in fact publish a trailer for the game a fair ways back. Need we say more? You can see the sequel in all its glory by checking out the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Remnant II will be launching on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam in “summer 2023.” Going by this window, we can expect to see it grace the shelves sometime around June, July, or August. That said, until Gunfire Games makes a formal announcement on the matter, we can't really say for certain.

As it stands, there aren't any special editions outside of the standard version on consoles and PC. If anything of the sort does come about, then Gunfire Games'll be sure to add the announcement to its official handle here. In the meantime, you can add it to your wishlist over on Steam.
